For starters, did you leave your garden hose connected and your hose bibb (outdoor faucet) in the ON position this past winter? If so, that’s a tried and true recipe for what could end up being a big plumbing problem!
Freezing temperatures during the winter can cause older models of outdoor faucets to crack, resulting in issues such as reduced water pressure for watering your lawn or washing your car – and that’s not all! If the problem isn’t caught early enough, all that water leaking from your outdoor faucet can result in water damage and mold inside your home…not to mention all the wasted water and energy!
To find out if your hose bibb was damaged this past winter, place your thumb over the spigot (if you have small thumbs, you may need to use your whole hand), hold it there and turn the water on. If you don’t get a lot of pushback and can mostly hold the water in, that means there is a crack somewhere in the piping and water is leaking out. On the other hand, if you feel a lot of pressure and you can’t hold back the water, you should be fine.
In most cases, a leaky hose bibb can be fixed by finding the packing nut under the handle and tightening it. This is a simple process that requires only a wrench. However, if this doesn’t work, it might be time to have the broken bibb replaced with a new, freeze-proof faucet.
At Len The Plumber, we can install your new hose bibb in short order for worry-free outdoor watering… this year, next year, and for many more years to come. Click here to learn more about outdoor hose bibbs in Maryland.
